  • Swimwear for Women Over 50: Comfort, Coverage and Confidence

    October 11, 2026 3 min read

The short answer: the best swimwear for women over 50 gives you coverage where you want it (upper arms, tummy, thighs), real support from a separate swim bra, and tops that are easy to put on and take off. Chlorine proof, UPF 50+ fabric means it lasts through years of pool classes and protects your skin in the sun.

Why your needs change, and why that's fine

Many women find that what they want from a swimsuit after 50 is simply different: more comfort, more coverage, and swimwear that works for the activities they actually do, like water aerobics, lap swimming, beach walks and pool days with grandchildren.

"I was looking for a modest swim dress that was appropriate for my age without me looking older than I am… to my surprise I found exactly what I was looking for."

    — Rose Ann

    What to look for

    1. Coverage where you want it

"These are perfect for older women looking to cover most of the thigh. They fit very well and are flattering."

    — Nancy R.

    2. Easy on, easy off

If raising your arms over your head is uncomfortable, a zippered top makes a real difference. The Easy On and Off Full Zippered Athletic Swim Top zips open all the way, with a roomy fit and sleeves to the wrist. Separates are easier too: no wrestling a wet one-piece on and off in the changing room.

    3. Real support

Our tops are worn over a separate swim bra, so you get support in your own size. The Supreme Swim and Sports Bra is our best-seller: customers come back for it again and again.

    4. Fabric that lasts

If you're in the pool several times a week, ordinary swimwear sags and fades fast. Chlorine proof fabric keeps its shape for years.

"I do 10 water fitness classes a week and really need chlorine proof items! … My second top is now almost 20 years old and still going."

    — Peggy J.

    5. Sun protection

All of our chlorine proof swimwear is UPF 50+, blocking about 98% of UV rays on the skin it covers. What UPF 50+ means.

Water exercise: a great fit after 50

Water exercise is gentle on the joints, and many YMCAs and community pools offer classes for older adults. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program, developed with the YMCA, holds warm-water classes two or three times a week. According to the CDC, studies of the program found improvements in range of motion, strength, flexibility and fitness. You don't even need to know how to swim.

"I swim at the YMCA 3 days a week with the seniors. I was so happy to see the chlorine resistant skirts."

    — Kim G.
