Flowers. Chocolate. Jewelry.
February 14th is pretty straightforward for the men in our lives. As women who want to use Valentine’s Day to tell our partners how much they mean to us, the path is a little less clear. Generally speaking, men are a bit harder to shop for than women, but I say, save the stressful gift buying for birthdays and anniversaries. On this day, that is supposed to be a tribute to love but has instead become an overly-commercialized gold mine for retailers, why not give our significant others an experience that ties back to the reason we’re celebrating in the first place: Because we love them.
Here are a couple of simple ideas that are sure to help you deliver that message and have fun while you do:
You can shell out some money for a day at the spa OR you can bring the spa home to him. Light some candles, break out the lotion and viola! You have, not only a sure way to put a smile on his face, but also some quality bonding time. And if you’re a terrible masseuse? At least you’ll have something to giggle about together.
Grab an apron
A nice restaurant dinner is a classic Valentine’s go-to. Instead, turn up the heat by cooking a gourmet meal together. This way, you get a great meal AND the simple pleasure that comes with working side by side to make a mess of your kitchen. And if the results are less than appetizing…that’s what the pizza in the back of the freezer is for.
Recreate your first date
Whether it was an epic adventure or simply dinner and a movie, it was the moment that started it all and it’s a great way to tell your partner how special your relationship is to you. It’ll also be fun to reminisce about the past and note all the things that have changed between then and now. If you remember it, you can even recreate your outfit from that day. Ten points to him if he notices!
Get on board
Every guy has his thing: sports, beer, video games, and, we’re progressive here, so let’s say ballet too. You know what gets his blood pumping and nothing says “I love you” like partaking in the experiences that make him happy, even if it’s not your cup of tea. Pick up a controller and kick his ass at Mortal Combat or pop a squat on the sofa with a six-pack. Who knows? Maybe one day he’ll return the favor and keep up with The Kardashians.
There are lots of ways to celebrate the holiday of love, but you don’t need to shell out a lot to show that special someone how much you care. Simple experiences that bring you closer together make the perfect hallmark card.
And if you’re single, The Mindy Project returns to Hulu on February 14th.
