HydroChic Does Aqua Fitness in NEW Chlorine Proof Prints!
To inaugurate our new chlorine proof prints coming in spring 2017, (we’re so excited!) we decided to test spin them and collaborated with our friends at Aqua Wellness World, an aqua workout center in Portchester, NY. Aqua cycling is a high energy group class modeled on popular spin classes that is in high demand.
We jumped in and took part in the amazing cycling workout class and we wanted to share this experience and the world of aqua cycling and exercise with you.
We interviewed our hosts, Kristina and Marylane
Tell us about the benefits of spinning in the water?
Cycling sculpts the thighs, abs & back like no other sport.Adding the resistance of the water speeds results. Adding upper body moves tones arms, shoulders & abs.Exercising in cool water slows your heartbeat so you work with more intensity, but without impacting the joints. The body’s motion in the water provides a stimulating massage, improving blood circulation, reducing swelling & increasing drainage of the lymphatic system. The hydrostatic pressure on fat cells also smooths out cellulite.
What other equipment is used?
“Kickboxing gloves” for upper body work during AquaCycling, and sometimes resistance bands. For our AquaHiiT Circuit class (High Intensity Interval Training), we set up 10 – 12 stations with underwater machines that work all parts of the body. We feature aqua bikes, underwater treadmills, two shoulder/arm machines, an underwater trampoline, neoprene dumbbells, a balance board, an ab slider, an adductor machine, and underwater step, foam paddles, etc.
Who are the women who come?
Our youngest clients are the teenage daughters of more regular clients, so 14 and up. Our oldest client is proud to be 82, and says that with Aqua Training she has regained her balance & found her waist again!
Most of our clients are 35 – 60 years old women. Some are recovering from injury, some are cross-training fitness buffs, some want to exercise without sweating.
We have men, too. It’s a real mix!
How do they feel about their workouts and why?
They are always happy after class and amazed at how great they feel after an aqua training session. The smiles leaving the pool are HUGE!
Do you feel there is a bit of stigma as if working out in the pool is for older women? If yes, does educating and showing the workouts on the advanced Italian bikes help change this?
In the US, yes. It’s viewed as granny’s activity. But we are trying to change that because our classes are challenging for grandmothers and athletes of every age!
Our classes can be custom-fit to every level, but they are a real workout. No muscle soreness, either, because the hydrostatic pressure pushes the lactic acid out of the working muscles.
Our bikes are used by the Italian Olympic team to cross-train, and maybe we need Michael Phelps to change the perception about AquaCycling and aqua training in this country!
As far as dress what’s recommended?
A supportive bathing suit, or cycling shorts, rash guards. You are mostly submerged during Aqua Training, not lounging around, so as long as you are comfortable & supported, that’s key.
Does having a chlorine proof, sun protective line to wear make a difference?
Chlorine proof wear definitely lasts longer, so that’s ideal. Many of our clients come 2-4 times a week, so they need swimwear that performs and stands up to chlorine.
Our classes are indoors, but yes, we have several AquaCycling studios in Florida and I’m sure their clients would benefit from the sun protection.
Look out for our new chlorine proof prints, coming soon!
